Jim? Can't just these OARs (of all regions) be used internally, only by Inworldz LLC, to recreate another grid later? This would avoid the IP issues, if these OARS are never let out. I think we can trust IW or you or Elenia on that.

If we don't have own land but live on a friends sim..can we leave our Inventory Box there?

Jim? Saving primmy objects will quickly fill the sandboxes. Isn't it better to save these in boxes too?

Also, I suppose the auto-return has been removed, otherwise the attempt will fail.

Jim? last time I tried OXP, they did not saved meshes. Was several years ago. Was this fixed? OXP save well textures and scripts, though.

@Lindee, the gofundme was just the first step, but then we found that even if raised, only a portion of it would arrive in time to stop Rackspace shutting down the servers.

@Caipi, if you own a sim, we are planning to save the content rezzed in regions. So rez whatever you want included in that region copy, put it from inventory into the region.  Because inventories cannot be saved, but rezzed items can.

We don't know if there will be a new grid or the old one revived later or nothing at all. But if we don't save this data now, we won't have any options later, it will all be lost. So rez what you can, then will see if we can find it a home next week.

There are several things involved here Yichard.

    1) People may not want to go to the "new" Inworldz.  They may wish to opt for a different grid and take things with them.  (Elf Clan hasn't decided what to do yet.  We'll make that decision when/if Inworldz is back online)

    2)  I've been hesitating to point this out, but unless I'm totally mistaken about boxes... it won't do any good to save things in boxes (Jim, correct me please if I'm wrong).

Boxes do not contain "inventory".  They contain UUIDs pointing to items on the asset servers.  Those asset servers are going down, so those UUIDs will be pointing to things no longer there.  So unless I'm mistaken, all these folks taking time to save thousands of items inside boxes are going to be severely disappointed when they try to open those boxes elsewhere... and find them empty.

The only way to even halfway save anything (that I'm aware of) is:

    1) Manually save to your hard drive-- which has so many perms limitations this is in itself an exercise in futility.

    2) REZ any item you want to save on your region so that it can be saved along with the oar.

Even then, I don't know what will happen to items that contain scripts, sounds, animations etc... since those items too are stored on the asset servers and the object itself just calls the item by UUID.   Could be some of those things get saved on the local server and are then saved along with the OAR.  But I'm not counting on it.

Yichard, just try it and let me know. ;)

But I think you're right, as it would make sense, since an OXP restore would by pass the mesh uploader process.

For the other question of items in boxes, the OAR files are object backups that include contents. Vin is reporting this doesn't support nested objects though so we may need to rez objects directly and then put non-object items in boxes.

I'm just starting a test now on Zauber's region full of nested objects and other interesting stuff, but it's almost 4am and tomorrow is a work office day (non-IW) so I'm out of time.

Everybody: saving objects in collada format .dae is possible, but it can mess them a lot if you don't take the following cautions:

    • It saves only objects you are the creator of
    • it saves textures if you check the box. They appear separately with cryptic names, so that you can use this for saving textures)
    • in graphics, set you LOD factors to max (in recent viewers, there are several. Pull them all to max
    • Still you need to set your camera in the middle.
    • small prims are more affected. you may need to take several saves of the object
    • this does not save scripts and content.

once a new grid is started, you can import these objects as models.

Can my friends leave their boxes with their inventory on my sim instead of Sandboxes?

One more comment. There is a full-grid upgrade rollout of new software in progress now.

The new version is 0.9.40. This update allows for OAR file backups with assets to be taken more reliably.  This is something we've never had to do before and in my testing I found a couple of minor problems that could interfere with reliability.

In fact the fix may fix the long-standing problem of regions suddenly locking up and requiring manual intervention on our part to allow it to continue.  (And XOFF (Ctrl-S) on the console, due to dumping binary asset data to the console on error, for any of you old ASCII folks out there.)

But this update is just an update, it doesn't mean an OAR is being taken now. No, that will happen when when Ele and Mai get to those, manually.

somehow it's very sad..we all donate hoping to rescue our old IW and now...almost reaching the goal

we may loose our old IW though

  • Avatar
    Jim Tarber

Zac, yes, but I don't know what that will mean. e.g. your friends might need you (your permission) when the time comes to restore it.  One of the details to be worked out.

  • Avatar
    Yichard Muni

ok, so the idea of items in boxes does not work. Objects must be rezzed.

    Do OARs save mesh?

  • Avatar
    Vinhold Starbrook

AS long as you give your friends build permission on your lands, they can rez there, and later when all can be restored, they can pick them up again or you can return the items to them, but that will put all into a mess in Lost and Found! lol

  • Avatar
    Vinhold Starbrook

Yes, mesh is saved as is and no changes to them. Works great as long as they are rezzed out.

So the truth of the matter is Inworldz as we know it is toast when rackspace pull the server plugs on friday.

Let's just be straight up with each other and stop messing people around.

Because rackspace have not been paid and will not be paid in time the monies due to them to continue renting the servers.

Which means anything that has not been saved in an OAR is gone. How is that progressing? How many regions have been backed up?

It's now Wednesday will that process be complete before the plug gets pulled. Yes or No? Closed question. Straight answer please...

I actually wished to safe IW..my old IW..that's what I paid for.

I somehow can't understand why are there suddenly so many troubles to pay IW servers??

Isn`t there a chance to safe the old IW

I have to say this:  Rackspace must be the biggest bunch of morons in the server business.  They'd rather destroy a business and lose all future profit than bend a little bit?   Total idiots.

pay the grid for another month to get time for a new payment system..that was how I understood the 17K ?

if we donate you can get the servers going and get a new payment system...that was told

  • Avatar
    Zac Chavy

we have just a short time frame..that' the trouble. Why did you announce all the trouble so late?

If we had more time we perhaps had the chance to find a way? You say on Monday that Friday the Grid shut

down...? The money has no chance to arrive in time?

And why can't it be paid when we have a new payment system?

But my main question is: Who makes the OAR files of the private sims? Is it Beth?

  • Avatar

if the sim owner has to make the OAR File..I don't know how to do that ??

I personally am withdrawing support from this new goal. The whole problem is, as time moves forwards there are conflicting views on how to save things, and what can be saved. To be honest. I donated to save InWorldz 'As Is'. Not only will this not happen now, its clear the even moving to a new grid will only take fragments of what I regard as my IW. What people say is true, that IW is the community not the prims. This being the case contact can be kept on any forum until something more organized and orderly can be sorted out. I want to make clear that I regard Beth as a very honourable lady who has acted in good faith at every turn, and has bent over backwards to come up with a solution. However this new direction is not what I signed up for, sorry.

for me it seems strange that they first make a gofundme to safe IW to pay another 30 days period , get new payment systems and suddenly IW can't be saved as is ??

  • Avatar
    Caipi Gin

Why cant we pay rackspace with the 17k for 30 days and have more time? How it was told?

I have donated yesterday and I am obviously a fan but I need to air some grievances. The campaign purpose clearly stated: save the existing grid. Now it's "you can get your money back if you don't like the new plan" - I don't think I can. During donation there was a clear warning that there will be no refunds and I don't see a button anywhere to get my money back. If there is please help me find it. Otherwise it does feel a bit like fraud. Promise thing a, take the money, deliver thing b or c. As to "well you could have joined the discord discussion" - no I could not because I have been reloading this page and the one with the original accouncement multiple times an hour for more than a day now and I never once saw a link to discord. I think it is very bad practise to silently have a discussion on a THIRD platform that many of us don't have access to or don't even know of. We are having a discussion here and on gofundme. Why the 3rd platform? And why not clearly point out that there even is a discussion? You could have put a link in the zendesk article or sent an update here. I for one feel excluded from the decision making process and it leaves a very bad feeling.
That said: I don't think that a new grid will make much sense or have any chance. From what I read the process is tedious and the creators might not join, and it all depends on them. There is no living virtual world without creators. The more you can buy, the more your business booms. No / angry creators => no chance of survival.
Sorry for the rant but I put very high hopes on this and I am very amazed by what the community pulled off but the whole thing just feels..  weird now and I'm getting trust issues and I would really please like to know where the refund button is. In case I want to push it later maybe.
Thank you for listening and love to all of you. <3
